At 18 you can test on your own. 16- and 17-year-olds can test only with an approved alternative learning plan, parental consent, and permission from their school board. You also have to be a Rhode Island resident.
You cannot already hold a U.S. high-school diploma and cannot be currently enrolled in a high school at the time you test.
You must be a Rhode Island resident to test here and receive the state credential, which is issued by the Rhode Island Department of Education. Out-of-state testers earn their credential through their home state instead.
A current driver's license, state ID, U.S. military ID, or passport is accepted at every Rhode Island testing center. Expired IDs and school IDs are not accepted.
Both options are available statewide, and in person is the cheaper of the two here. Online proctored testing requires a recent 'green' score on a GED Ready practice test, a webcam-equipped computer, and a private, quiet room.
You must score at least 145 on each of the four subject tests independently. If you miss the mark on one subject, you retake only that subject — not the whole battery.
