GED Testing Service states that in West Virginia you may not schedule the test without going through your local adult learning or Option Pathway program. Creating a ged.com account and trying to pick a date will not work. Contact the Kanawha County Adult Education Center on Leon Sullivan Way, enroll, sit GED Ready, and the program schedules you once you pass it.

West Virginia is one of the few states where the test taker pays no fee at all — GED Testing Service states plainly that there is no cost to the test taker for taking the GED test in West Virginia. There is no per-subject price and no battery total to save up for. What the state asks for instead is the adult-education route: enrollment in a local program and a passing GED Ready score before you are scheduled.

The Kanawha County Adult Education Center at 500 Leon Sullivan Way is in the middle of town, Carver Career Center at 4799 Midland Drive is about six miles east, and Ben Franklin Career Center at 500 28th St. in Dunbar is roughly seven miles west. Boone County and Putnam County both have career centers around twenty miles out. Your adult education program will tell you which one you are scheduled at.

Nineteen, and that is not a typo — West Virginia sets the bar a year higher than almost every other state. GED Testing Service states you must be 19 to test in West Virginia without an age waiver. Younger applicants need a waiver, and Option Pathway students need additional documentation. There is no residency requirement at any age, so you do not have to prove you live in West Virginia to test here.
No. West Virginia has no at-home online proctored option. GED Testing Service publishes an online price and an online retake policy for most states; for West Virginia it publishes neither, and the word does not appear on the state policy page at all. Every subject is sat in person at an approved center. Your preparation can be entirely online — the exam cannot.
You retake it, with a wait. West Virginia applies a 14-day waiting period to your first two retakes, and Challenge Academy participants are exempt from that. After that wait you provide proof of having met the eligibility requirements to your test administrator again. From the third retake onward the wait rises to 60 days. There is also an annual ceiling: a subject test may be taken up to four times per calendar year. Since the test itself is free, a retake costs you time rather than money — but the time is the real budget here, so plan on being ready rather than on trying again.

BridgeValley Community and Technical College, the University of Charleston, West Virginia State University and West Virginia University all treat the GED as equivalent to a high school diploma for admission.
