California requires GED test takers to be at least 18. The only path for a 17-year-old is to (1) have been out of school for at least 60 consecutive days and (2) submit a written request from the military, a postsecondary institution, or a prospective employer. Online testing under 18 requires a parent or guardian present at check-in. There is no path for 16-year-olds.
Applicants cannot already hold a U.S. high-school diploma and cannot be currently enrolled in a California high school at the time of testing.
California requires applicants to be California residents under Government Code section 233, or members of the armed services assigned to duty in California. Out-of-state testers cannot test in California — you must test in your state of residence.
A current California driver's license, California state ID, U.S. military ID, U.S. passport, or Permanent Resident Card is accepted at every California testing center. Expired IDs are not accepted. The name on your ID must match the name on your ged.com account.
Both options are available statewide. Online proctored testing requires a 'green' (likely-to-pass) score on a recent GED Ready practice test, a webcam, and a private quiet room. California residency rules apply to both modalities.
You must score at least 145 on each of the four subject tests independently. Subjects can be retaken individually without re-doing the others, and the certificate is issued by the California Department of Education once all four are passing.

Yes. The California High School Equivalency Certificate is treated identically to a California high-school diploma by the University of California, California State University, every California Community College, every accredited private college, every employer, and every branch of the U.S. military. The certificate is issued by the California Department of Education's Adult Education Office after you pass all four subject tests.
The official test is $41 per subject, or $164 for the full four-subject battery. Pricing is identical in person and online. If you fail a subject, the discounted retake at a California test center is $15 per subject (GED Testing Service waives its $26 portion; you pay only the California test-center fee). The discount is valid 12 months and resets each time you re-pay. Online proctored retakes are not discounted; they remain $41 per subject. The GED Ready practice test is $7.99 per subject, or $25.99 for the four-subject bundle.

Yes. The full GED test is available in Spanish in California — all four subjects. You can mix English and Spanish across subjects — take Math in Spanish and RLA in English if that serves you. The diploma issued is identical regardless of which language you test in. Twigera prep is delivered in English; we recommend testing in whichever language you write and think in most comfortably.
Most students who study 45 to 60 minutes a day are test-ready within 8 to 14 weeks. The day-one diagnostic shows where you actually are; the plan adapts from there. California does not require a minimum number of prep hours before testing — you can sit the test as soon as your practice scores say you are ready.
California 17-year-olds can test if they have been continuously out of any school program for at least 60 consecutive days immediately before the test date AND have a written request letter from the military, a postsecondary educational institution, or a prospective employer. The 60-day clock is continuous — if you re-enroll in any school for any period during the 60 days, the clock resets. While you can take the subject tests at 17 under this exception, the credential itself is not issued until you turn 18.
Yes. The California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) is a separate state-administered exam available only to California residents who are at least 16 years old OR have completed at least one academic year of 10th grade. Passing the CHSPE produces a Certificate of Proficiency from the California State Board of Education — equivalent to a California high-school diploma. The GED is the federally-administered alternative, available to adults 18+ (or 17 under the narrow exception). Both are accepted by California colleges and employers; the CHSPE has a younger age threshold but is only offered in California.
