Five campuses run official GED testing across the county. San Diego City College sits at 1313 Park Boulevard downtown, with Trolley access. Mesa College is at 7250 Mesa College Drive in Clairemont. Miramar College is at 10440 Black Mountain Road near Mira Mesa. Southwestern College at 900 Otay Lakes Road in Chula Vista is closest for the South Bay. The College of Continuing Education runs computer-based GED testing at its West City Campus, 3249 Fordham Street in Point Loma, Room 127. Book through ged.com, not the campus.
California charges $41 per subject, or $164 for the full four-subject battery, and the price is the same whether you test on a campus or at home through online proctoring. If you miss a subject, the discounted retake is $15. The official GED Ready practice test costs $7.99 per subject and is billed separately. San Diego College of Continuing Education and other adult schools can sometimes help with the fee — worth asking before you pay.
Yes. California offers at-home proctored testing around the clock from any San Diego address, at the same $41 per subject you would pay on campus. You need a passing score on the official GED Ready practice test first, plus a webcam-equipped computer, reliable internet, and a private room where nobody will interrupt you. That GED Ready requirement applies only to at-home testing — walk into Mesa or Southwestern and it does not apply.
Yes. California offers all four GED subjects in English and Spanish, on campus and at home, and you may combine languages across subjects to earn the credential. That matters in a border county where plenty of households run in both languages daily. You choose per subject at registration on ged.com. Twigera's lessons are taught in English, and the certificate issued is identical regardless of the language you tested in.
Standard testing age is 18, and California opens two earlier routes. You can test if you are within 60 days of when you would have graduated had you stayed in school and completed the usual courses. Otherwise, at 17 you need to have been out of school for at least 60 consecutive days and bring a letter requesting the test from the military, a college, or a prospective employer. Either route lets you sit the exams, but California does not issue the certificate itself until you turn 18 — worth planning around if an employer needs it in hand.
The California Department of Education issues the California High School Equivalency Certificate once you pass all four subjects at 145 or higher out of 200. You do not need to pass them on the same day or in any set order — each subject stands alone and your scores are held until the set is complete. Employers, colleges, apprenticeship sponsors, and the military treat the certificate exactly as they treat a traditional high school diploma.
Yes. San Diego City, Mesa, and Miramar Colleges all accept the California High School Equivalency Certificate, as do Southwestern College, San Diego State University, UC San Diego, and California public institutions generally. The community college route is the usual first stop because it is open-admission and the cheapest option in the county, and credits transfer into the CSU and UC systems through statewide articulation agreements.
Yes. San Diego College of Continuing Education runs free GED preparation across several campuses, and adult schools around the county offer additional no-cost classes, some bilingual. Those programs cover instruction only, not the $164 exam fee, which you pay at registration on ged.com.
